Kathleen de Azevedo Kathleen McClung Alyssa O'Brien benefit: WOW! Women on Writing
more about the poets & WOW: KATHLEEN DE AZEVEDO’s fiction has appeared in many publications including /Boston Review, Greensboro Review, Cream City Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, Gettysburg Review/ and /TriQuarterly./ Her novel about Brazilians in Hollywood, /Samba Dreamers,/ was nominated for the Northern California Book Award and won the 2006 Pen Oakland Josephine Miles Award. She was born in Rio de Janeiro and lives in San Francisco. She currently teaches English at Skyline College.
KATHLEEN MCCLUNG teaches at Skyline College, The Writing Salon, and privately. She has also served as managing editor at small presses publishing books for scholars, clinicians, and activists. Her poems, short stories, and essays have appeared in /Poetry Northwest, The Rambler, Spirituality & Health, Hawaii Pacific Review, Tiny Lights, Hot Flashes, off our backs,/ and other journals. Her work won first prize for flash fiction in the 2009 Soul-Making Literary Competition and second prize in the 2009 Sacramento Poetry Center contest.
ALYSSA J. O'BRIEN is a lecturer at Stanford University,
where she teaches in both the Program in Writing and Rhetoric and in
the Continuing Studies Program. She has published or co-authored seven
books on writing, and she writes regularly for /Coastviews Magazine./
At Stanford, Alyssa also directs the Cross-Cultural Rhetoric Program, a
global learning initiative that connects students across five
continents through video-technology and blogs. Before joining Stanford,
Alyssa taught creative writing at Cornell, the Eastmas School of Music,
and the University of Rochester. Alyssa won the Phi Beta Kappa
Outstanding Teaching Award in 2006, and what she enjoys most is helping
people discover their voices in writing of all kinds. For the past two
years in particular, Alyssa has enjoyed moderating the Open Mic session
at the annual WOW! conference.
WOW! WOMEN ON WRITING programs have celebrated International Women’s Day through annual conferences
and writing workshops at Skyline College since 2003. On March 6, 2010,
WOW! Voices Now: A Morning of Readings and Refreshment, will feature
Dorothy Bryant and Genny Lim, who will read from their award-winning
work in fiction and poetry. Open readings with members of the audience
will follow. This is a free program, a give back to the community of
readers and writers who have attended and supported WOW! events. Poetry
and Pizza donations will provide honoraria to guest authors.
